Cooling a Parked Van Safely: Ventilation, Power and Setup

A parked van gains heat quickly through glass and metal. Cooling it effectively begins long before you switch on an appliance.

Reduce solar gain

Park with the smallest window area facing the afternoon sun. Exterior shades work better than interior curtains because they stop energy before it reaches the glass. A reflective windshield cover and insulated side panels make an immediate difference.

Keep ventilation intentional

Provide a clear fresh-air inlet and a separate route for hot exhaust. Do not place the exhaust where it can be drawn back through an open door or window.

Cooling is not a substitute for fresh air, and fresh air is never optional in an occupied vehicle.

Know your power budget

Add the running demand of every device, then keep a safety margin. Check cable ratings, connectors and campsite outlet limits. If using a portable power station, estimate runtime under realistic summer conditions rather than laboratory figures.

A simple setup sequence

  • Shade the vehicle and open doors to purge trapped heat.
  • Install intake and exhaust paths.
  • Place the cooling unit level and secure it for stationary use.
  • Close the conditioned area and begin at a moderate set point.

Never run fuel-burning generators inside or next to openings. Follow the equipment manufacturer’s clearance and electrical guidance at all times.
